Song of the Week! 4 October 2015

Sorry if you were here earlier today/last night and saw our hiccup on the SotW scene. With Lokamp not readily available for the weekend, the rest of the crew had a little miscommunication breakdown and ended up releasing a SotW on a song we already covered.

Now as a replacement feature, in view of a regrettable piece of news hit earlier this week, we once again dedicate this column as a tribute to a recently deceased talent.

Megurine Luka (巡音ルカ) is the pink-haired Vocaloid from Crypton following Miku and the Kagamine twins. One of her standing-out feature is her bilingual voice bank: voice actress Yuu Asakawa (浅川悠) provided both Japanese and English sound bites for use in the Vocaloid engine. This makes Luka more capable to produce authentic English words than the typical approximate "Engrish" by other Vocaloids at the time of release. Other than sharing the spotlight in World's End Dancehall with the more well-known Miku, this is the Vocaloid's first solo song to be included.

Regarding the song, Luka Luka Night Fever is producer samfree's first work using the Megurine Luka engine. The composition has since proved to be an instant hit, reaching Hall of Fame status within a week, and arguably his best-known work among his portfolio spanning multiple genres and media. Luka Luka Night Fever's extreme popularity across the internet has cued samfree to go on producing a whole series of similarly catchy Eurobeat tunes using various other Vocaloids and UTAU idols, dubbed to be the SAM Night Series or just the Night Series. All installments has a recognizable title format: first having the feature Vocaloid's name twice, a star symbol, followed by some catchphrase including the word Night.

Luka Luka Night Fever is also a popular Vocaloid pick for other rhythm games, with appearances in maimai and Konami's many Bemani-branded games (with a cover).

The Taiko no Tatsujin notechart created for Luka Luka Night Fever is a decent challenge as a 8★. For a good performance one would need to stably clear the multitude of 5- and 7-hit rim-majority clusters, making this a good chart to train for such patterns.

Being one of the debut new Ura notecharts for Murasaki ver., Luka Luka Night Fever Ura is not to be looked down upon. The chart has embraced many of the newly popularized tropes for a recent 9★ standard, starting from overtaking large notes at the music's high-energy cries, generally long and highly-mixed streams fusing 16th and 24th separations, to the frequent even-number clusters knocking into offbeat and the almost restless length all across.

Now that this is over, turns out that this was not the only time we done goofed: we have featured 3DS2 main theme Chojikuu Adventure as a SotW twice, both in September 2014 and in June 2015. We will be merging the contents into the earlier feature, and giving you another replacement feature for the latter by the end of October.
